The technology used to combat hair loss has evolved explosively over the past decade or two, resulting in amazing advances inconceivable in prior years. Hair transplants have benefited from advancements in robotics as well as in scanning and imaging technology.
The two most advanced types of transplants used today are FUT and FUE. FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) is a process in which a tiny strip of skin is removed in order to extract transplant-ready hair follicles. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a related method of extracting hair follicles in which the individual follicles are collected in much smaller groups, one to four at a time, allowing more natural looking transplantation patterns.
Is FUE As Effective As FUT?
While they use different methods, FUE and FUT deliver equivalent results, having roughly equal effectiveness. The differences lie in the other details, such as comparative levels of scarring. When the goal is immediate fullness, FUT produces a more immediate effect.
Is FUE Or FUT More Painful?
Relative levels of post-operative pain between FUE and FUT find the FUE method less painful. FUE also does not leave a linear scar… although it does require shaving the donor area (unlike FUT).
Do FUE Scars Fade?
While FUT procedures leave linear scarring as an effect of the “strip” style method of collecting the donor hair, FUE leaves little to none. Most cases show no visible scars after the initial recovery period. In the few exceptions where a scar is present, it is far less than those left by FUT and fades from visibility over time.
What Percentage of FUE Grafts Survive?
Like most things, the hair transplant industry has certain standards that govern it including metrics of effectiveness. When you get FUE treatments from a reputable clinic that industry standard is a 60-70% graft survival rate. It is worth noting that experienced physicians utilizing the most current technology have reported survival rates of 90% or more.
Does FUE Look Natural?
FUE procedures collect and transplant much smaller groups of follicles, allowing it to produce more detailed and refined results than other methods. The grafts are applied in naturally occurring patterns, resulting in a more organic and natural looking outcome.
