Can You Get an Eyebrow Transplant?

Oftentimes, when we think about hair loss, we focus on how it affects our scalp. After all, as we age, we are more and more likely to experience some balding on our scalp, with many of us experiencing male or female pattern baldness more severely. People affected by hair loss in those instances are often prone to lowered confidence and depression. It can even affect our careers.

While not as common or discussed, some conditions and situations cause hair loss on other parts of our bodies. Some of those other areas where we may experience hair loss can also impact our confidence and sense of self, like the eyebrows.

Why Have My Eyebrows Disappeared?

Despite the fact that losing one’s eyebrow hair is a less common occurrence, there are still a number of potential causes for why you may have lost your eyebrows partly or fully. One cause for this is an autoimmune disease known as alopecia areata. This is a condition where our body’s immune system attacks our healthy hair follicles, causing hair loss across our body. This can result in either partial or full eyebrow loss.

Some drugs and treatments can cause hair loss that affects our eyebrows as well. Unfortunately, in many cases, these drugs or treatments are crucial to our health and are necessary for our conditions. This can include antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and chemotherapy

How Does an Eyebrow Transplant Work?

An eyebrow transplant is very similar to the kind of hair transplant you would get on your scalp. A follicular unit transplantation, or FUT, is not an option as that is specifically designed for receding hairlines. Follicular unit excision (or FUE transplants), however, are useful here.

There are multiple ways to implement FUE hair restoration. Robotic hair restoration utilizing the ARTAS®  is an option for people pursuing hair restoration on their scalp. When it comes to the eyebrows, manual FUE hair restoration using Neograft® is a great option. This technique is ideal for smaller scale procedures as well as those who are not candidates for robotic FUE hair restoration.

Eyebrow Transplant vs Microblading

Microblading is a form of non-surgical eyebrow restoration. The way it works is the targeted area of the eyebrow is tattooed to make it appear fuller while also reinforcing the shape and structure of the eyebrow. Unlike an eyebrow transplant, you are not actually restoring the hair in the eyebrows. While it is appealing for some, it will never match the natural look that only a hair transplant can provide.
